Job description
Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.
The Embodied Systems team is the new hardware-centric group within Google Deepmind Robotics. Our mission is to accelerate AI research in the physical domain through the world's most advanced robotics systems. You are joining on the ground floor of our hardware operations, meaning your fingerprints will be on the processes, products and relationships that we forge.
Artificial intelligence will be one of humanity’s most transformative inventions. At Google DeepMind, we are a pioneering AI lab with exceptional interdisciplinary teams focused on advancing AI development to solve complex global challenges and accelerate high-quality product innovation for billions of users. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, ensuring safety and ethics are always our highest priority.
Responsibilities
- Translate complex engineering schematics into standardized service manuals.
- Act as the Tier 3 support lead during critical failure windows. When the fleet hits a "wall," you are the person who finds the root cause—whether it’s a firmware conflict, a thermal issue, or a mechanical fatigue point.
- Lead the technical onboarding for Temporary Vendor Contractors (TVCs). Be responsible for certifying that our external partners can execute repairs to our exact standards.
- Partner with the Research and Development team to provide "boots on the ground" feedback. You will advocate for hardware changes that make the robots easier to service in the field (e.g., better bolt access, modularized limbs).
- Own the precision-heavy tasks: IMU alignment, joint-torque calibration, and sensor fusion validation for bipedal movement.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in the manufacturing or hardware product development environment (e.g., robotics, aerospace, or automotive).
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with multi-axis actuators, strain wave gears (harmonic drives), and complex wire harnesses.
- Experience using CANalyzer, Wireshark, logic analyzers, and custom Python-based diagnostic scripts.
- Ability to create visual SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and training modules for non-technical or junior audiences.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and work on your feet in a lab or field environment.
