Amazon Operations Technology is looking for an experienced Applied Scientist II to join our Orchestration team in Austin. In this role, you will tackle complex problems and develop scalable, high-performing solutions that require minimal long-term maintenance. Our team spans all global core services and infrastructure within the Operations Technology space — our systems support continuous deployment to over 200,000 devices globally.


Key job responsibilities
- Partner with Systems Engineers, Network Engineers, and Software Engineers globally to research, design, and deploy machine learning models and data-driven solutions that improve efficiency across our Fulfillment Centers and Transportation Sites.
- Work with a wide variety of datasets, ML frameworks, and research methodologies — spanning third-party platforms, open-source tooling, and proprietary Amazon systems — to develop and validate scientific approaches to complex operational problems.
- Technicians and Engineers worldwide will look to you for scientific guidance, analytical insights, and innovative modeling solutions to problems that are truly unique to Amazon's scale and operations.

- In your day-to-day work, you will focus on developing and applying predictive models, optimization algorithms, and intelligent automation to enable our business to scale effectively with growing customer demand.

About the team
The CIA Orchestration team provides a user-friendly, auditable mechanism for network operators to manage provisioning, configuration, life-cycling, and policy management across network devices. Through Campaign Manager, operators can plan and execute large-scale workflow campaigns — covering firmware upgrades and configuration updates across specific device layers or regions — using wave-based deployment to reduce blast radius and ensure controlled rollouts. Guided by a Safety over Speed principle, we prioritize availability-safe deployments backed by continuous validation and customer-driven innovation. - 3+ years of building models for business application experience
- PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience
- Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
- Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing - Experience using Unix/Linux
- Experience in professional software development

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage), 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
