Job description

As the manager of the Production Metal Frameworks team, you will own the design and implementation of the Metal API to unlock the full potential of Apple Silicon for developers. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with software teams both inside and outside of Apple to bring incredible new GPU experiences to life across Apple’s platforms.

Lead your team to design, develop, and deliver high-quality additions to the Metal API
Monitor industry trends to identify gaps (or opportunities for differentiation) in Metal.
Partner with cross-functional teams to improve the graphics stack and meet the ever-evolving needs of Apple’s operating systems and external applications.
Support and grow the Production Metal Framework team as you execute in a highly dynamic environment

Hands-on experience with GPU APIs (Metal, DirectX, Vulkan, CUDA, etc)
Solid foundation in systems engineering including OS fundamentals and performance analysis
Prior experience as a manager or tech lead driving large engineering projects through definition, planning, and execution phases
Demonstrated software design, debugging, and performance analysis abilities
Strong programming skills with C/C++/Objective-C
BS/MS/PhD or equivalent in Computer Science or related field

Multiple years of experience directly managing engineering teams
Wide knowledge of graphics/compute API’s including their differences and how they have evolved
Detailed knowledge of a GPU architecture including their capabilities and performance characteristics
Familiarity machine learning fundamentals and ML frameworks as well as how they are accelerated by modern HW
Familiarity with Apple framework and API design patterns as well as Swift programming
Top notch communication skills with the ability to influence up, down, and cross-functionally

Apple’s Graphics, Games, and Machine Learning team provides the compute and graphics software foundation across all of our innovative products including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, Vision Pro, and Apple Watch.

The Production Metal Frameworks team is responsible for Metal API design and development across new OS and product releases. We are looking for a motivated, technical manager who can bring a broad understanding of GPU technologies to help define and deliver the next generation of Metal.

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $198,300 and $342,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
